Grindelwald First is a mountain in Grindelwald, Switzerland that sits at 2,166 meters high. At the top of the mountain are a variety of activities that range from hiking, cliff walk, eating lunch with a view, ziplines, and mountain carts. There are a variety of options for ordering tickets for the activities (further explained below). It was roughly a 20 minute drive from where we stayed in Interlaken. To get to the top of the mountain, you can take a gondola ride.

Breakdown

Grindelwald First Starting Point: Dorfstrasse 185 3818 Grindelwald Switzerland. —– This is the address where you can buy gondola tickets and where you will board the gondola to go up to First.

Starting in Grindelwald, you take the gondola up to First. As you go up, there are multiple stops and these are stops you will end up at when you are coming back down.

  1. Grindelwald – board the gondola.
  2. Bort
  3. Schreckfeld
  4. First – this is where the best views are and where you will find the restaurant.

Depending on which activities you choose to do, there is a strong possibility of stopping at each location on the way down.

  1. Cliff Walk – There are two options for this walk, you can either walk around the right side and experience more of walking on the edge or go through the restaurant area. This is often confused with the Mürren Via Ferrarta (Keep an eye out for that post!).
  2. First View – If heights make you nervous, this may be the better option! Very secure on the ground, a short walk will take you to this amazing viewpoint.
  3. Hike to Lake Bachaplsee or beyond – we only went to the lake and it was quite the view with the mountains reflecting in it! It took about an hour to hike to it. Less time hiking back as we didn’t stop for photos.
  4. First Flyer (zipline) – This is from the very top of the mountain. The line was super long and the ride was only ok. This takes you from First to Schreckfeld.
  5. First Glider – This is similar to a zipline but you are on your stomach instead. It actually starts at Schreckfeld and you are pulled backwards up the line to First where the ziplines begin before coming back down. This one also sits 4 people at once.
  6. Mountain Carts – These fun, seated trikes take you from Schreckfeld to Bort. Bonus is they give you helmets and there are different sized trikes to ensure you are having the safest experience possible. Keep in mind this is not the same as the Alpine Coasters.
  7. TrottiBikes – Set up like a scooter on two wheels, these bikes take you from Bort down to Grindelwald.

Time and Cost

Get there early. Yes this is what you always hear but it is so true! We arrived in Grindelwald at the starting point at 8:00 am and there was already a line. It opened at 8:30 which allowed us to be on the third gondola going up. The main reason to do this is to get the First Cliff Walk to yourself!

The order above is the order we went in to complete the activities. This is because most of them take you down one level. So top to bottom is best if you don’t intend to go back up the gondola.

Time: 8am – 5ish pm is how long we spent from start to finish. We stopped for a lot of photos and we did all of the activities. We grabbed snacks in the shop at Schreckfeld. It might take longer if you eat lunch there. You can also cut out time by not doing the hike.

Cost: Depends. Ahhh our favorite answer! If you are choosing to do only one activity, then you can just pay for that activity and pay for the ride up to the top on the gondola. Or you can buy a pass that allows for multiple activities and covers the ride to the top once. This is what we did and it definitely was worth it! Here is a link to the passes – Grindelwald First Passes.

Recommendations

  1. Pack layers and your backpack to put them in.
  2. Pack snacks and water. There is a spot at First by the bathrooms to refill your water bottle.
  3. Pack sunscreen and/or a hat.
  4. Do the multi pass. This saved so much money in the long run!
  5. Bring cash. If you don’t get the multi pass and end up choosing to do an activity, they only take cash.
