Phuket is located off the west coast of Thailand in the Indian Ocean, south of Bangkok. It is most famous for its’ beaches, nightlife, island hopping, and culture. As the largest island it is perfect as a starting point to visit other islands in the area. When planning a visit, there are a few key activities that we think everyone should experience. They combine culture, relaxation, play and sunshine! A well rounded trip is easily possible when visiting Phuket. Let’s jump into it!
The Big Buddhas of Phuket

It is well known that visiting the buddhas is a must during your visit. There are 3 located in Phuket. These are the newer big Buddha, the old big Buddha, and the relaxing Buddha.
New big Buddha can be seen from many different parts of the island. It is an easy drive up a long hill to reach the temple. There is a large free parking lot at the base of the temple. A few shops were set up but not open as we arrived for sunrise. This is a #1 recommendation because at sunrise we were the first people there and the lighting was perfect! It appeared they were working on the area right below the Buddha so we did not go inside the temple area. This is a great spot for photos and even more beautiful in person!

The old big Buddha is the golden one. It is large but nowhere near as big as the new one. Expect to park either on the road or at the lot across the street. There are tents set up with snacks and drinks across the street as well. Entrance and parking are both free. This temple is set up a little bit different with the temple being multiple levels. While the gold buddha is beautiful, the small space around it makes it more difficult to get photos. It is also located in a busier, more populated area.
Relaxing Buddha was not as impressive as previously hoped. While it is large, the temple area around it is nothing to rave about. With the area being a bit bigger but very empty, there isn’t much to see beyond the statue. It is also kind of on top of a building making the photos a little more difficult to take.
***Hot Tip: wear shoes that are easy to take on and off when visiting temples as most will not allow you to wear shoes inside. Always dress appropriately and bring coverings just in case.***
Monkey Hill

It’s impossible to visit Thailand, especially Phuket, without seeing the monkeys. One of the most common locations is at Monkey Hill. Parking is free and there is a decent amount available. If you want to walk to the top of the hill to see the viewpoint of the city it is close to 4 KM. In the intense humidity and sunshine this can feel even longer. People sell bananas at the bottom of the hill then about halfway up is a sign stating that is where you are supposed to feed the monkeys. We do not approve of this behavior as it can lead to the monkeys becoming aggressive with humans. Instead we recommend keeping a safe distance and being aware of yourself and belongings at all times.
General Tips:
- Don’t bring a bag, the monkeys know that’s where food is and will try to climb on you.
- Keep your phone safe as they can try to steal it.
- Beware of the stray dogs, we didn’t see them as we went to take photos at a viewpoint and got growled at by a whole pack.
- Wear sunscreen and a hat, there is shade but not the whole time.
- Be smart. The monkeys can be aggressive with each other and with humans. Pay attention to your surroundings.
Thai Massage
Everyone knows the famous Thai massage, such good pain. Tons of shops are spread out throughout the town offering Thai massages and regular massages. Shop around to find the best price while still finding a quality location. Quite a few have google reviews so it doesn’t hurt to check ahead of time. We got ours for around $10 per person for an hour. After leaving our shoes outside, they brought us into the back area where it was all sectioned off with curtains. In the same little curtain space we were provided a basket for our items to go below the tables. Expect them to stretch you, knead you, and possibly walk on top of you. If it is too painful you can request they be more gentle. I think we had bruises afterwards.
If you like to partake in other types of activities that happen to be legal there, many shops nearby sell options ranging from snacks, drinks, and flowers. These can be enjoyed before receiving your massage for extra relaxation. Make sure to wait to eat until after the massage. Also be aware that there are different types of massage parlors….it is very obvious which ones are which.
Beach Time on Phuket

Going island hopping is an absolute blast. Staying on the island doesn’t limit you though from going to the beach. Kata beach and Banana beach are highly recommended.
Kata beach is the perfect location for sunset. The beach is huge with tons of space so it is easy to find room. With clear water and soft sand, it is hard to miss this spot. By being not far from the shops, stopping here before or after dinner is highly recommended. It is within walking distance of many restaurants and markets. Expect to park on the street then walk to the beach area.
Banana beach is considered to be a ‘hidden beach.’ In reality, it is very well known but thankfully still big enough to not feel crowded! Expect to park on the road then walk to the sign. From there it is a short walk through the trees and down a slight hill to reach the beach. A few shops sell snacks and drinks on the beach. If you wanted a massage on the beach, that is also an option!
No entry fee and no fee for parking are required. Pack some sunscreen and water. It gets very warm!
Dinner at the Markets

The absolute best way to eat when in Thailand, honestly all of Asia, is spending time at the markets. Grab a little bit of food from multiple booths and pretty soon you’ll have a filling meal! Our top recommendations is Malin and Old Town Walking Market. At Malin Plaza there is a partially covered market area. Many booths sell authentic Thai food either pre-made or made to order. Make a couple of laps then decide what you want to eat for dinner! Old Town Walking market is open on Sunday nights. The shops along the street are full of cute clothes and unique crafts. The street itself is lined with booths selling food, jewelry, crafts, clothing, and live music. It’s the perfect spot to try small bits of food you are interested in and feel immersed in culture. The live music and dancing is the cherry on top!
General Recommendations for Phuket
Here are the top things to know for your visit:
- Consider renting a motorbike or a car for your travels on the island. We liked having a car for all of our beach items and dry clothes.
- Taxis are set up as small trucks where you climb into the back that is often blasting music and flashing lights. The cost is low and gives similar vibes as a tuk tuk.
- Don’t feed the wildlife.
- Pack plenty of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and water. It is hot and humid.
