St. Kitts, officially known as Saint Christopher Island, is one of the two main islands that make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is located in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. St. Kitts is a small island with a rich history, natural beauty, and a vibrant culture. St. Kitts is roughly circular in shape and covers an area of about 69 square miles (178 square kilometers). It is made up of lush forests, beaches, and Mount Liamuiga, an extinct volcano.
Accommodations
and Transportation
We stayed at the Marriott St. Kitts Beach Club located in the Frigate Bay area of the island. This was an amazing option because the resort itself was wonderful and it was in a perfect location. We were in walking distance of many restaurants and beaches. The condo had a kitchen so we walked across the street to the grocery store and picked up different snacks and meals. If you are interested in a full review of this resort, keep an eye out for our next post!
ATV’s are street legal on the island. On the first day Ross ran (like literally, he went on a run) roughly 4 miles to go pick up our ATV from the rental place. Turns out there was a second location that was less than half a mile away from the resort. I would highly recommend doing this. We were able to go all over the island with the ATV. It was great for some of the beach locations where you have to go slightly off road. We also found some trails through the forest that we rode through.
Activities on St. Kitts
St. Kitts Beaches
The biggest activity when going to an island is of course the beach. Sadly, while there many of the beaches had quite a bit of seaweed. Here are the ones we went to ranked by favorite to least favorite:
- South Friars Bay – This beach was often mostly empty, had gorgeous black sand, and was right next to Shipwreck Bar (with great food and snorkeling gear for rent).
- Frigate Bay – This was not far from our resort. It had a lot of restaurants right on the beach so we often went here for dinner.
- Cockleshell Bay – This beach appeared to be more of a local hangout with small restaurants scattered along the beach and many families having cookouts.
After hitting the beach, we went shopping at a large mall area. It was during off season so the mall was not very busy and some shops were closed. They had a lot of knockoff shops full of purses and sunglasses. We attempted to go to yoga one afternoon but the location had changed from what was originally on the website so we missed it.
Excursions from St. Kitts
A great excursion is to taking a trip to Nevis. We chose to do a Snorkeling Booze Cruise. This was absolutely gorgeous and so much fun! The tour had about 20-25 people total. There was music, lunch, and drinks on board. The snorkeling area was stunning with clear and calm water. They gave us quite awhile to float around and look at the fish. There was also a shipwreck underwater that people were able to swim to. Click here to read about it! — Dreamy Snorkeling Adventure in the Caribbean Islands – St. Kitts and Nevis.
The Best Part
of the Trip
One morning we chose to take a sunrise ride on the ATV to Mount Liamuiga. Since it was early, no one was around when we arrived. The hike had some difficult portions where there was a bit of scrambling and climbing using your hands. Overall it wasn’t a bad hike, just really warm. I highly recommend bringing plenty of water and snacks as well as solid hiking boots.
The best part of this experience (of the whole trip TBH) was when Ross proposed at the top of the volcano! He set up my phone to record and set up the drone recording as well. I had an idea this was happening so I planned ahead and brought a shirt to change into. I’m so glad I did because we were super sweaty after climbing to the top. If you want to see the actual moment, watch the video linked above!
Recommendations
- Get the ATV. It was a great way to explore the island and get off the beaten path!
- Climb the volcano and climb Timothy Hill Overlook. We didn’t do the overlook hike which I regret it because it is a beautiful view (according to the photos).
- Go to Shipwreck for lunch and swim around South Friars Bay.
