Isla Mujeres is a beautiful island located off the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. It is situated in the Caribbean Sea and is part of the state of Quintana Roo. The island is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation and outdoor activities. The island is surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest coral reef system in the world.

We chose to spend the second half of our New Year’s Mexico Adventure on the island. We spent the first half in Cancun (keep your eyes open for that post!). The ferry from Cancun to Isla Mujeres was pretty cheap and we booked round trip tickets.

Accommodation in

Isla Mujeres

We chose to stay in a hotel (this one – https://expedia.com/affiliate/6LqzkzA) that was right on the beach. The room was pretty small but it was very cheap and was a really good location. We generally don’t mind a small room since we spend most of our time out exploring. In the mornings, you could get a small breakfast across the street for free that including toast, coffee, and juice. It was located a few roads away from the main road. This was perfect for us because we walked all over the tourist section of the town and up the beach as well. On the first day, right by the ferry dock, we rented a golf cart. This was great because it gave us access to exploring the entire island. On the opposite end of the island there were multiple resorts and restaurants. A big recommendation is only rent the golf cart for half a day-one day. We rented it the entire time we were there and really only used it one day.

Activities

working out on the beach on the island of Isla Mujeres
Snorkeling to an underwater museum off of Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres treehouse yoga

The island is extremely tourist-y. So we spent a decent amount of time going into the shops. There were two options for yoga right by our hotel. I chose the treehouse yoga for $10 and they provide a mat for you. The first day I went, Ross went running while I was there. The second day he came with me and enjoyed it. We also got massages on the beach for around ~$30. Let me tell you, if you need a whole body reset going to treehouse yoga then getting a massage and laying on the beach is the perfect way to do it. I was in the absolute best mood after this.

Snorkeling Excursion

We also took an excursion to go snorkeling at the underwater museum. We arrived at the dock in the morning and they gave us life jackets and gear. While floating they provided margaritas. There were three stops, at each stop you jumped off the boat into the water and followed the guide. The guide led us through multiple areas of the museum. Ross really enjoyed this and even with his life jacket on he swam pretty far down to get to the sculptures.

A pro for this experience was the guide had a go pro for taking pictures and videos. The con of that was that you had to leave a good review to get your photos back….seems a little ~fishy~. I chose to not go back in for the third location. The waves were pretty strong and I was not enjoying it. The waters were pretty crowded as well due to so many different groups of tours. They took us to another part of the island where we got to eat lunch and lay on the beach. Then we headed back to the original pick up point on the island.

We chose to do this activity after we arrived on the island. So we used one of the kiosks on island to schedule the tour. If you are interested in a similar tour, we have linked a few options below. The next time we went to Cancun we also swam with the whale sharks, this is a tour you can book from Isla Mujeres as well (Once in a lifetime excursion – swimming with whale sharks).

Tips and Tricks in

Isla Mujeres

Our first tip is to not rent the golf cart for the entirety of your time on the island. It is really great to have for at least a day to see the entire island, but we did not use very much. Everything we needed was within walking distance. Our second tip is to exchange for pesos before you get there. Some places don’t take cards, and if you pay in US dollars (they do accept them everywhere) then they give you a terrible exchange rate. And when giving your change back they give you the bad exchange rate again, so they hit you with it twice. Our third tip is to watch for happy hours. Pretty much all of the bars and restaurants had happy hours. We got a huge meal with drinks for almost half the price.
