Do you like doing activities that give you an adrenaline rush? Do you like being in the mountains and aren’t too afraid of heights? This Via Ferrata in Mürren is the perfect activity for you! Let me tell you all about how to get there, what to expect, and help you decide if this is the right adventure for you!

What is a via ferrata?

A via ferrata is a climb through the mountains that utilizes rungs, ladders, and steel cables that are fixed to the rock in the mountain. The climbing gear includes a helmet and a harness that allows you to latch onto the cables along the route. It is very important to follow safety guidelines when it comes to utilizing the harness. This includes having the harness tightened correctly to your body.

Adrenaline Portion:

  • Climbing across the cliff edge with just a metal rung beneath you (it’s a far drop!)
  • Going across 2 tight ropes
  • Suspension bridge (easier if you get to do it by yourself vs a group being on the bridge with you)
  • Multiple ladder sections

Where is the via ferrata

and how do I get there?

Ok this part can be confusing! There is a Grindelwald First Cliff Walk that is very different (in location and in experience!). For that info, keep an eye out for out next post!

The via ferrata is in Mürren to start with and you are hiking one way to Gimmelwald. Mürren does not have cars so you have to take the cable car to get there. We were staying in Interlaken and parked our car at Schilthorn Cableway parking to take the cable car all the way to the top. There are multiple routes depending on where you are coming from since this can be considered a day trip. Yes, public transport is possible to get there. Yes, it can be confusing as there are many tiny “towns.”

Looking ahead when buying cable car tickets, keep in mind that if you rent gear (more on this further down), you will need to go back up from Gimmelwald to Mürren after completing the hike. Then back down to where you parked either by cable car or by walking.

Gear Options,

Necessary and Optional

This is the necessary gear:

  • harness with the two carabineers
  • helmit
  • sturdy hiking shoes

Things that are optional:

  • A guide
  • Gloves – this 100%, I know I said optional but I was so thankful to have these.
  • Sunscreen
  • Layers of warm clothing – wear a backpack to lose some layers along the way.
  • GoPro – please, please, please be safe if you plan to be holding a camera. My helmet had an attachment but we didn’t know that was even an option until afterwards since we were renting the gear.

All of our gear was rented from Intersport in Mürren. It was 30 CHF for the helmit and harness. They require you to wear hiking shoes or they will not rent the gear to you. If you do not have them on, you can rent them. Reserve your gear ahead of time and start in the morning! After 2:30 pm they will not rent out gear due to the cable cars not running later in the day. They will also not rent out gear if there is bad weather due to safety concerns.

At the rental shop, you can also buy clothing, shoes, and gloves. The gloves were 30 CHF each. I was sooooo happy to have these. If you know you are going and have space in your bag, this could be an at home purchase (like these on Amazon – Climbing Gloves) to save a little bit of money. We wore layers and I complained about being cold for the first 1.5 hours of the day. Then within minutes of the sun coming out, I complained about being warm for the rest of the day.

We felt comfortable going without a guide. When exploring guided options they were starting at over 100 CHF. After the hike, we were happy we went alone. Both of us feel very comfortable with hiking and can manage heights. **This is a personal decision, each person is different. Please consider your own comfort levels before making the decision. If you take a guide, there is an option to do the zipline instead of one of the tightropes.
