Are you looking for that perfect tourist experience when visiting Athens, Greece? Being a tourist in a new city can be an absolute blast if you know what to look for! Here is a list of our favorite things to do that are more on the tourist side of exploring.

Sign for Fresko Yogurt Bar
A cup of Greek Yogurt with toppings in an evil eye container

As an avid greek yogurt eater at home, it was a no brainer that this was the perfect breakfast. Fresko was the shop we liked the most and there is a large variety of what you can order in your yogurt.

Athens Souvenir shop

It’s always fun to see the variety of souvenir options when going to a new place. Some are super unique! We passed on guy selling itty tiny books and another that did fast street art. A few of the more common items to find are clothing and jewelry. It is super popular to see items with the evil eye symbol on it. This is because there is a belief that the evil eye can protect you from those who wish you harm or have negative thoughts towards you. I got a bracelet for $1 with the evil eye on it.

Tired from all that shopping? Find a great gyro spot. The price can range from super cheap to decently expensive depending on the location. We tried multiple shops and loved them all! It’s hard to go wrong with any of the options.

The Acropolis in Athens Greece

Dive deep into history by visiting a variety of ruins throughout the city. Here is a link for the pass we got — Athens Archaeological Sites Combo Ticket. This is a great way to visit all of the monuments on your own time. The entrance tickets are generally good for one entrance to each location. Spending as much or as little time in each location is a great perk of this pass.

Also highly encourage watching the sunset at the Areopagus Hill. Expect a crowd but the hill is large enough to find your own area as well.

***Hot tip: For $3 you can download the informational app called Acropolis Self-Guided Tour. Pop in your headphones and get the history right at your fingertips with ease.***

A unique place to grab dinner is at the Plaka Steps. There are multiple restaurants situated all the way up these stairs. Not only is the food yummy, the location is adorable! If you don’t want to sit in the middle of the stairs the restaurants also have indoor seating. We chose a rooftop location with a great view of the stairs and of the Acropolis. Due to the unique location, the prices at these restaurants are slightly higher than in other areas of the city.

Once you’ve walked the whole city you’ve earned a yummy beverage at a cool spot. There are tons of rooftop bars throughout the city. Depending on your vibe it is easy to find the perfect spot. Hype Astro Bar is highly recommended for great drinks and a good view. They also have a fun photo-op spot! The city looks just as beautiful in the evening!

Stray cats roam the city at every turn. Our favorites were actually in the ruins themselves! Some people were carrying cat food with them as well and giving small bits to the friendly cats. Keep in mind they are strays so there is no guarantee they will be nice. Always be careful when approaching them.

  1. Pack a hat and sunglasses. When exploring there is often minimal shade.
  2. Sunscreen is also encouraged for the same reason.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes. Walking is the best way to get around the city and truly experience it.
